Driveway Vacation
02:22
|
|||
Off a couple hours early
Walking barefoot to his 626
He keeps some liquor store sandals
Cause he just can’t handle
Boots for another minute
Driveway vacation
Clear summer day
Too many tourists on the road
So he’s staying close to home and
Dropping ice in some Gordon’s Gin
Homemade webbed beach chair
Car pulled on the lawn
With a busted radio
Playing only George Jones
Billy Joe and John Prine
No crowds or parking
Just a clear mind and country rhymes
Make's a happy man
With a bare foot tan
And the gas tanks still full

Shooting Stars
03:49
|
|||
A faint star fading
In a summer night haze
Hope it comes back
Like an old friend
That split town for a few
When they come back through
You just pick up
And do like you used to
I ought to quit
Betting on them
Shooting stars
You can count them
Like you count on
The drunkest drunk at the bar
They’re just as reliable
As the drunkest drunk
Promising promises
Fading off faded
From the last call bar
I don’t have much and it
May stay that way
Turning stories to songs
Ain’t a reasonable way
To get paid these days
But I got friends
And I don’t care
For the brand new things
All that shinny shit
Flairs up my ADD

Make It Through January
03:32
|
|||
He’s been pushing that sander cross a hardwood floor
Since he got back from the Second World War
Telling jokes to keep the boys in line
And laughing through the winter
Mothers don’t buy floors for Christmas
Just plastic toys and board games
He’s drinking coffee
Praying that phone will ring
If we make it through January
We got it made
That’s what my Granddad
Said to me
Christmas at Thanksgiving
Only time we could all make it back
Little brother's sparking joints outside the kitchen
And the whole house is packed
Grandma asked me when I’ll get a real job
So I'm out sneaking some wine in the garage
Sometimes you can’t miss your family
Till you're gone
Well the bar's been dead since last Tuesday
I’m scrubbing the whole place down
Guess that everybody’s New Years Resolution
Was to settle down for a while
Dealers don’t get high on their own supply
As a bartender that rule don’t apply
I hope I stay flush
Till the winter gives way

Desert Sky
02:45
|
|||
Just hearing what I want to
Making your truth my lie
Even if I get it right
The moment just passes by
But I ain’t gonna worry bout it
Rather just stare at the desert sky
Screeching tires on the interstate
Hit my heart like a shot of cocaine
Now I want to spend my last dime
Run back into the desert sky
But I ain’t gonna worry bout it
Rather just stare at the desert sky
Racing this whole time
Just to make it
To the end of the line

Flipping Pennies
03:40
|
|||
The phone rang he picked it up
We hopped in that old tan truck
No radio just the gravel road and stories
The vets were meeting for coffee
Like they do every so often
At that same MacDonalds
Well Grandad held court for a while
Walking back he stopped and smiled
Said well “Lookahere young man”
He pointed to a penny
Said if it was a snake it would have bit me
But don’t you dare pick it up
Cause tails side up means bad luck
So he flipped it and got back in the truck
He left the good luck for the next passerby
Cause tails means bad luck
And heads could turn it all around
Grandad taught me plenty
From how to ride a bike to bamboo rod fishing
And I never once saw him lose his cool
But the thing I’ll remember most
Is how he told a joke
And I’ll keep flipping pennies for the next passerby

Last Friend In Town
03:57
|
|||
Most days I don’t want to be found
So I took to hiding in a crowd
But the party’s thinning out
Looks I’m the last one around
Brother don’t let me down
You’re the last friend I got in town
He said it ain’t funny anymore
Can’t watch you turn into another sad story
We had some real good times
But none of that is worth your life
Brother won’t you draw the line
It’s too early to be saying goodbye
No one picking up the phone
Guess I got my wish
Now I’m all alone
Been pushing it too far too long
At the time I thought that made me strong
I don’t want to let you down
Gonna find a way to stick around
Brother don’t let me down
You’re the last friend I got in town

Cold Blue And Free
03:00
|
|||
Feeling uneasy
On a bumpy road
Like the shocks might go
On the next pothole
I’m hoping for the ocean
Where the water’s cold
Blue and free
A lot like me
Cold blue and free
I ain’t got a hold of nothing
But nothing’s got a hold of me
Got me running from any kind of company
So I’m hiding in the country
That’s cold blue and free
Standing on a hillside
Wondering why
Some feelings stay true
And others fade with time
I’m breathing in the air
That the eagles ride
Blue and free
A lot like me
Cold blue and free

One Place At A Time
02:14
|
|||
One place at a time
Is where I try to keep my mind
Sitting under this old oak tree
Where I let it all unwind
One place at a time
Is where I try to keep my mind
Sharing stories with some old men
And drinking old man wine
One place at a time
Is where I try and keep my mind
With you beside this fire
And our hometown in your eyes
I’ll be an old man if I’m lucky
I’ll be with you if I’m still breathing
Yeah that’s where I keep my mind
One place at a time

Sorry Broken Mess
02:56
|
|||
Sometimes the only reason
A man is hard and mean is
He brought a world of hell upon himself
A body broken from the labor
Making money to pay for
Drinks for he and friends at the bar
Flat knuckles from the faces
Of those that needed chasing
Out of town for doing good folks wrong
He looked as tough as leather
But paranoia did his heart and head in
Till he was a sorry broken mess
Always looking for a lover but
But settlin' for any woman
That’d shoot a smile his way
He had a nasty inclination
Of finding the worst in situations
Yeah he could put a good time in the ditch
You may color me judgmental
But ask me and I'd tell you
This song's about myself and most men I know
But I'm holding on to hope
That the next unlucky souls
Find a way to save us from ourselves

End Of A Song
03:26
|
|||
I hope you’re not drinking
On my account
No one’s to blame
For a light that burned out
Well I ain't alright
But you ain’t wrong
Sometimes there ain't no rhyme
Just the end of a song
We sat in the silence
Long enough
Got tough and held steady
Like a fist fight in hand cuffs
It don’t matter
As much as we think
And the whiskey
Hasn’t changed a thing
So if you’re drinking cause of me
We’re even now
I thought our time of sharing
Was all but through
But this cold empty feeling
Was tailor made for us too
|
||||
11. |
||||
I’m thinking bout leaving again
Can’t hang a hat on a wall closing in
But I already know it won’t matter where I go
Cause trouble loves to ride a tail wind
Rolling on watching the miles
Spin round the odometer dial
Quiets my mind and helps pass the time
Till I’m lost down some old roadside
My biggest crime
Was being fooled
To think this world was mine
I’m just a visitor at best
At worst a lousy houseguest
That raids the fridge
And leaves garabage behing
I was born in a place
Where no on gets on your case
For being from out of town
And I find it funny how
Word gets around quiet towns
I see your local pride
When you stare at me like some outsider
Soon I’ll be on my way
If we meet again this will be the place
Cause you’re not the traveling kind

Broken Window
05:30
|
|||
Got a broken back window
And a cold wind of doubt roams
The halls of my mind
It pulls me away
Even the brighest lights fade
Till it all looks the same
Locked up and lonesome
Staring through hole of a
Broken back window
A yard of dead flowers
Dodging calls at all hours
A blank stare a country mile
Locked up and lonesome
Staring through the hole of a
Broken back window
Without warning
You came through the backdoor
And picked me up
I’m trying to keep up
And stay close with the good ones
Think I’ll keep that broken window
In case a broke down friend
Needs to let himself in
